Most modern washing machines have already worked out what's wrong with them — and almost nobody passes that on.
When a washer stops mid-cycle, it usually displays a fault code, or flashes its lights in a repeating pattern. That code is the machine reporting which circuit it couldn't complete — and it narrows the fault dramatically before anyone opens the case.
Because the difference between "fixed today" and "fixed next week" is almost never the technician. It's whether the right part was on the van. A drain pump, a door interlock, an inlet valve, a motor brush set, and a control board are five completely different components — and no vehicle carries every variant of every one for every model.

Where to find it: the rating plate — around the door opening, on the back panel, or behind the pump filter flap.
Why it beats the brand: the same model name frequently covers several build variants, including different motor types entirely. A brushed motor with replaceable carbon brushes and a direct-drive motor are not remotely the same repair, and a model name alone doesn't always tell you which you have.
Photograph it rather than reading it out — serial numbers are long, and a photo removes transcription errors.See the next section. This is the one people leave out, and it frequently narrows a fault to a single circuit.

This changes the visit as well as the diagnosis. A drum full of water with a wet load inside is a different job from a dry machine that won't start — and it tells us to arrive prepared to drain it down.
A newly delivered machine that bangs violently — check the transit bolts were removed. It's the most common "faulty new machine" of all.
A repeat fault is a different diagnosis. A second pump in two years suggests something is getting into it. Ice-cold washes only, and lots of detergent, produce their own set of recurring problems.

On a machine with a display, that's a code — a letter and a number, or a short alphanumeric string.
On a machine without one, it's a pattern: a particular light flashing a set number of times, or a combination of indicators lit together. That pattern is a code too, and it's just as useful.
Codes group faults by circuit. They distinguish a drainage problem from a fill problem, a heating problem from a motor problem, and a door lock problem from a control problem — which is precisely the split that determines which part comes on the van.

And those aren't interchangeable.
A technician who knows only "it's a six-year-old front-loader" is choosing from a list. A technician with your serial number is looking at one part number.
It also answers the availability question up front. On an older machine, whether the component still exists is frequently the whole answer — and that's far better established on the phone than after a diagnostic visit.

These are a major job and rarely a same-visit one — and on many machines they're also the point where replacement deserves a proper comparison.

On an older or discontinued model, the component may simply not exist — and that's the answer rather than a delay.

Run these before booking — several of them are the whole fault.
If the machine won't drain or won't spin, do this first. Behind the flap at the bottom front on most front-loaders. Tray and towels ready — there's more water behind it than you expect.
If any of those solves it, that's a call you didn't need to make.
Water is escaping and you can't stop it, the machine is sparking or smells of burning, or it's tripping the breaker. Unplug it and turn off the taps.
It won't drain and the filter is clear, it's overfilling, it's leaking from the back or underneath, or the drum is full of water with a load locked inside.
A rumble is developing on spin, clothes are coming out wetter than they used to, or it's vibrating more than it did.
One programme has stopped working, a drawer sticks, or a display element has failed.

The pump filter first — free. If that's clear, the drain pump. Commonly carried, and frequently a first-visit fix.
The door interlock is the most common cause — and interlocks are among the most frequently carried parts there are.
A belt, a coupler, or worn motor brushes on machines that have them. Belts and brushes are commonly carried.
Taps and screens first — free. Then an inlet valve. Usually carried.
A heating element or thermostat. Frequently carried.
Drum bearings — not a first-visit fix, and a decision rather than a part.
Where the water appears decides it — door seal at the front, filter cover at the bottom front, hoses at the back, or the drawer. Seals are frequently model-specific.
Nearly everything on a washing machine is worth repairing. Pumps, filters, inlet valves, pressure switches, door interlocks, belts, brushes, couplers, elements, dampers, seals, and hoses are ordinary parts with proportionate labour, and many complete in a single visit.
Drum bearings, particularly on sealed drum assemblies where the whole drum is replaced — and particularly on a machine past the middle of its life.
Typical service life sits somewhere in the region of eight to twelve years, varying considerably by how hard the machine has been worked.
Integrated machines stay worth repairing longer, because replacement involves the cabinetry and the door front as well as the appliance.
You'll always get the repair figure and a realistic replacement figure, so the comparison is real.
