Which makes the fastest diagnostic question not "what's broken" but "what still works." Each of those points at a short list, and none of them require anybody to open the appliance.
That matters because the difference between "fixed today" and "fixed next week" is almost never the technician — it's whether the right part was on the van.

It splits the parts list before anything else. A gas oven's heat comes from a burner, an igniter, a flame sensor, and a gas valve. An electric one's comes from elements. Nothing crosses over.
And on a range, the oven and the hob may be different fuels — dual fuel appliances are common, so tell us both.Ten seconds, and the most valuable thing you can give us.
Where to find it: the rating plate, usually around the door frame and visible when the door is open — sometimes on the side of the door itself, or behind a bottom drawer on a range.
Why it beats the brand: the same model name frequently covers single and double ovens, gas and electric versions, and several element, sensor, and board revisions. They aren't interchangeable.

Go through it before you call: bake, grill, fan, each cooktop zone, the light, the clock, and the display.

And a specific one worth flagging: a door locked shut. If the door won't open and the display shows a lock symbol or a code, say so — it's a different visit from a heating fault.
Put an oven thermometer on the middle shelf, set a common baking temperature, and read it at least twenty minutes past preheat.
Why it matters: it separates "doesn't heat at all" from "runs cool" from "runs hot" — and those go to different components. A drifting sensor, a weakened element, and a failed door seal all produce food complaints that sound identical.
Then move the thermometer around — front to back, shelf to shelf. That tells us whether it's a temperature problem or a distribution problem.See below. This is the question people don't think to mention, and it reorders the shortlist entirely.
Also worth telling us: a power cut, a boil-over or major spill, recent installation, or a tripped breaker.

This is the question almost nobody volunteers, and it changes the shortlist immediately.
A pyrolytic self-clean cycle runs far hotter than any cooking function, and it puts the whole appliance under thermal stress that older components frequently don't survive.
Thermal fuses blow, door lock mechanisms seize, control boards fail, and elements give out.
So if an oven stopped working during or shortly after a cleaning cycle, the likely causes reorder completely — thermal fuse, door lock assembly, and control board move to the top of the list, ahead of everything else.
If the door is locked shut, let it cool completely first. Most lock mechanisms won't release while hot. Still locked when fully cold is a fault — and it's one of the most common consequences of running the cycle on an ageing oven.
Run it when a failure would be inconvenient rather than disastrous — never the day before you need the oven — and on an ageing appliance, consider cleaning manually instead.
Manufacturers run production changes mid-model, and sell the same model name across fuel types and configurations. Elements, sensors, thermostats, door glass, and control boards all vary within what looks like one model.
And door glass in particular is almost always model-specific, which is why it's rarely carried.
A technician who knows "it's a built-in electric double oven, about eight years old" is choosing from a list. One with your serial number is looking at one part number.
It also settles availability up front — on an older appliance, whether the part still exists is frequently the whole answer, and that's far better established on the phone.

You smell gas — after calling the gas utility and 911 — or there's smoke, sparking, scorching around a control, or a burning electrical smell.
A gas flame is persistently yellow or sooty, there's soot in the oven cavity, the oven won't heat at all, or a burner won't light.
Cooking is uneven, temperatures have drifted, one function has stopped working, or a gas oven is taking longer and longer to light.
A lamp has failed, a clock has stopped, or a knob is cosmetic.
And have the six ready — especially what still works, and whether a cleaning cycle was run.
